I sometimes wonder if visitors to a fur trapper rendezvous find themselves intimidated or confused by the many unusual sights, sounds and smells.
Perhaps a little light can be shed on this subject.
The first thing you might notice is the variety of lodges that are scattered throughout the encampment. You are likely to see period tents such as the easily identifiable Tepee, or tents that look like small canvas cabins. Lodges like the Baker or Whalen are similar to tall pup tents but one side lifts to form a lean to of sorts where cooking could be done out of the elements. The Courier de Bois (runner of the woods) looks like an upside down ice cream cone with one internal center pole. The Marquis may be familiar to you. Picture the tents in all the biblical movies.
Next, you may notice people dressed in very different styles of period clothing. The Eastern Long hunter wearing his long frock with the fringed cape, knee socks reaching to his breeches. The French Voyageur with his wool tuque hat and long sash about his waist. Of course there must be the western mountain man with fringed buckskins and wide brimmed hats.
History is a fascinating past time especially when you live it. Come visit rendezvous here at our club the 3rd weekend of September (runs the 20th-22nd). You will see what I mean.
