As the trappers and explorers, that preceded us, the Clan of the Wolf members have the urge to explore and live off of the land. In the early 1990’s a group of eight members began an annual pack-in and hunting trip that took us to the wilds of Kalkaska.
Our destination on the last weekend of September was more specifically the Sand Lake Quiet area. Once there, we stripped the vestiges of modern life, donned our wool, buckskins, and packs, then headed into the woods for the weekend.
Upon choosing our campsite by the lake, we erected our leanto’s and built our fires… (flint and steel of course). It was then time to scare up some meat for our bellies by dispatching squirrels, rabbit and such, with our trusty Trade Guns! Scattering in all directions, it was not long before our dinner of squirrel, jerky, dried corn, and some not so dry “corn” was consumed.
Settled in front of our fires after a long day, we smoked our pipes and recalled the day’s events. On one occasion, we had a mid-day visitor who was mountain biking through the area. The gentleman stopped his bicycle and stood staring at us with a very confused look on his face. We wave and greeted him with hearty hellos but he continued to stare and did not respond. After a good long period of time, he leaped atop his bike and pedaled away as fast as he could go. I still wonder to this day what he thought about his unexpected trip to the 18th century!
Be sure to take this trip to the fur trade era and visit us at the Spring Rendezvous, which will be held the third weekend of May… May 17, 18, 19.
