October 1, 2023STICKY TIRES NEWS LETTER – October 2023
I am writing this with 2 weeks to go before our last race weekend. It used to be that you wouldn’t see this writing until after the race, but thanks to Kelly Finazzo’s efficient editing, I expect it will be online in plenty of time.
The season has surely gone by fast! It has also been an excellent racing season- incidents have been minor with a couple of rare exceptions, there is a flagging renaissance thanks to Ron Cech’s tireless work and OTDs and rentals have been very busy. It is the hard work of Clutch and Dave Hinman and a small number of volunteers that enable us to subsidize the cost of racing for all members. The cost of providing a racing venue like ours would, I think, more than double without their contributions.
Unfortunately, Jerry Shiloff has been ill and is currently unable to be Chief Steward for the September race. Scott Chaiken filled in for Jerry last race weekend and is willing to work the next race. Keep Jerry in your prayers to make a full recovery.
There will be ballots for Sportsman of the Year at the Paddock Shoppe race on Weekend 6. Make it a point to cast your ballot for the member you feel has made a positive difference for the club. Also, tickets for the Awards Banquet will be sold at the Paddock Shoppe, while they last, for only $25.00. The Board voted to subsidize the cost of admission as a member benefit. If you wait until the last minute though, the cost will go up to $75.00, so buy them early! The
banquet will be held on November 11th in the OCSC clubhouse.
October 1st, from 9AM to 3PM will bring a return of the “fun run” renamed as the Volunteer Appreciation Day.
Admission is free for volunteers and their families. There will be rides and some chances to drive cars racers are
volunteering to provide. Kids will be able to ride their bicycles on the track and run RC cars on pit road if they have them. Bike riders will need to bring helmets to be able to go out on the track. We will be grilling hot dogs and
hamburgers for everyone.
Here is another cut and paste, this time from last month. WHRRI’s continued success depends more than you think on our participation in our parent club: I’ll spare everyone my rant about volunteering in a virtually all-volunteer club. We all know what needs to be done. I will, though, continue to extol the virtues of being active at the OCSC with a reminder that we are already members of OCSC and that we owe the club our loyalty and participation. As is the case with WHRRI, it seems that 95 percent of the work gets done by 5 percent of the members. Despite there being more than 130 WHRRI members, I don’t think I see more than 10 of us at the OCSC general membership meeting. We can do better. The food is good and the beer is cold. Come to a meeting and find out what is going on.
See you at the track, Brian Murphy
